Portraits of the Proletariat Part 2 at Dream Jungle Tattoo this past Saturday, where music, art, and fashion came together under one roof. Bambu and Rhythm Natives played a set together in a spot that exhibited pieces by artists under the Beatrock Artist Kollective umbrella and documented by us, Oishi Media, and photografiya. That was a mouthful. AYO!

Shout out to Manila Ryce for putting the event together. Who won the auctioned piece??

THE DAY BEFORE

One of our favorite shops in the 818, Primitive, drops its summer collection today. But we got a couple of things yesterday. Jon and Bojo had been waiting long for them to drop their “BLVD” New Era fitted, and I had been waiting long for another release of the Air Max Infrareds, both scheduled to release on July 24. Thanks to Andy, we came up. Peace to the Primitive family. I’ll see you at Agenda.

BREAKING BREAD

There’s nothing like two artists you’ve worked with come together. We experienced this several months ago with Gabe and Jake of The Big Pill and the Rhythm Natives. Now, Bambu and RN come together for the Beatrock Artist Kollective show, Portraits of the Proletariat, exhibiting tomorrow at Dream Jungle Tattoo at 8p. There is no charge for awesomeness.

WALK TO REMEMBER

Forgive me for the cheesy title, but Kim and I are in shock over the sudden death of Dr. Marc Abrams - the “Silver Lake Walking Man”. Kim grew up in the area and has seen the shirtless walker with bright tiny shorts carrying a newspaper countless times. For me, I took notice of him when I started spending more time in LA and less time in the valley. He really was a fixture in the neighborhoods of Silver Lake and Echo Park. Though he was a stranger, there was something very reassuring about seeing him in his element. Rain or shine he took his 15 mile daily trek simply for exercise, for the sun, to see his friends, and to read the newspaper. He was so iconic to the area that his image has been painted on a mural next to Local on Sunset Blvd.

Just last month, The Los Angeles Times followed Abrams on one of his treks and took some pretty cool photos of him. RIP, man.

So you saw the coverage from Bam’s birthday/video premiere party yesterday. Today, I’m gracing you readers with the official video for Old Man Raps.

It’s been a long time since I’ve really connected with a music video (I think the most recent ones were Jay-Z Young Forever, and of course Bambu’s The Queen is Dead). That’s partially because they aren’t aired as much as they used to be. But it’s also because everything that is aired doesn’t have too much substance. Kid Heroes, Xylophone Films, and Digital Martyrs do a fantastic one here. The narrative is so moving, and actually reminds me of the things I went through as a kid. The greatest aspect, though, is the fact that the both the song and the video are equally great and equally significant. Watch and listen.

Last Thursday, I was at the live broadcast of Soul Assassins radio at Backside. DJ Muggs, Mr Choc, and Ern Dogg set up their whole rig in store and shared their talent for over two hours. The full show can be heard tonight on Shade 45 XM 66 at 7p PST. It was such a pleasure getting to rap with DJ Muggs and Mr Choc - two guys’ whose work I’ve admired for a long time.
