TOUGH SUMMER August 7 2009

Regrettably, I think this summer is going down as the cruelest. Since it started, the world has lost many notable figures. Ed McMahon, then Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, Billy Mays, Dash Snow, Cory Aquino, Baatin, and now John Hughes.

John Hughes’ movies defined my generation. The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Great Outdoors, Home Alone, the list goes on. I’ve seen those movies over and over again. And sometimes when they play on Saturday afternoons, I’ll still watch them even though the DVD sits in the shelf next to me. With his coming-of-age comedies, he launched the careers of now household names like Sean Penn, Steve Carell, Macaulay Culkin, and John Cusack. Above all, Hughes succeeded in not only creating box office powerhouses, but also in creating culturally significant landmarks.

We’ve lost another, so I will say this again…may the angels lead you in.
