SOUL DOG July 27 2011
I was “off” last night, meaning no meetings scheduled. On nights like that, I usually take care of personal stuff - running errands, catching up on Keeping Up With the Kardashians TV, or just taking a break. I was on my way to run said errands, when I got a text from Wella. She was in the valley getting ready to eat at Otis Jackson’s Soul Dog. Since nothing ever really gets in the way of me and food, I turned the car around and went to North Hollywood.
I’m usually skeptical about fancy hot dog places like this. I’m perfectly fine with the dirty dog, or a Dodger dog, or even the Costco dog. But this place is quite good. It takes your favorite soul food dishes and uses them as toppings over a hot dog. I ordered the mac n’ cheese one. Yah, mac n’ cheese. Glen ordered from the non-dog menu and had a fried chicken plate with cornbread, okra, and sweet potato fries. That all sounds super heavy, but it wasn’t. In fact, Soul Dog makes it known that they’re health conscious with no nitrates, no preservatives, etc. I’d definitely go back and try the Original. Collard green slaw and sweet potato puree toppings? Yes, please.
