HOLD UP, HOLD UP February 3 2010
Last week, Kim and I met with two fellow USC grads, Brian and Ben, creators and curators for Hold Up Art, a new art space slated to open next month in Little Tokyo. Their purpose is simple: gather notable pop urban artists reigning from California into one gallery. Right now, 358 East 2nd Street is under construction. High windows had just been installed when we were there. The store front installation, by Augustine Kofie, is near completion. Their storage area is packed with pieces they will be carrying - from Justin Bua to Jeff Jordan, from digital reproductions to screenprints. Some will be available for sale, but not at ridiculous prices. Hold Up Art tweaks the traditional gallery model to keep the world of art relevant to anyone and everyone.
After the formalities, we got to know the guys on a more personal level, over Sapporo and sushi. We collectively agreed that between art and food, we have common interests. So stay tuned for future collaborations with Brian and Ben, including a full interview in our e-zine. But first, check them out at their group pop up shop (with RIF LA, Archrival, and No. A) at the DTLA Art Walk next Thursday, Feb 11.
