D STREET December 21 2009

One of my favorite art shows last year was the Bloc28 one in DTLA, where Disney sought artists like David Flores, Steven Daily, and Mear One for a group show where the guys would re-interpret world’s most renowned mouse. After that show, I started seeing the exhibit product at a store called The Vault at Downtown Disney. It was a small collection, with a couple New Era caps here and a couple inspired tees there.

This past Saturday, Disney opened D Street, a store fully dedicated to what they deem as “Disney Underground”.  It celebrates the interpretations of a new generation of visual artists by featuring and selling artwork, apparel, and vinyl toys. It gives people a chance to enjoy Disney in another kind of way, through a different kind of lens.

Kim and I were talking about how great of a move this was for Disney. They already earned street cred with their subdivision, Bloc28. And they furthered that with collaborations with The Hundreds and UNIQLO. Now, they’ve expanded their credibility with a flagship store/ art space that showcases their own urban merchandise. We remembered how it was never cool to really like Disney. Everyone was all about Six Flags when we were younger. The times have changed…
