COLLEGIATE FASHION August 8 2009
I just heard that Harvard University launched a contemporary menswear line called Harvard Yard. The clothing won’t say “Harvard University” on them nor don the school colors. The apparel is actually inspired by photos of students lounging in the Harvard Yard in the 1960s.
I have to commend the Ivy League school for doing things a bit differently. This is perhaps the first time an American university has lent its name to a fashion-oriented collection. Collegiate fashion tends to stay within the range of polo shirts/t-shirts/shorts/hats emblazoned with the school’s logo. In USC’s case, their range expands to a collaboration with Rainbow sandals for a cardinal and gold colorway, because no matter the season, 75% of USC is wearing those sandals…I just had to throw that in there. Back to Harvard. Despite the current state of the economy, they have chose to release this line at the right time - when the prep fashion of the 60s has made a strong comeback. There is growing relevance of classic American style, which is good since we don’t do well in other areas around the world. Just look at the Sartorialist or Lookbook, a lot of the men photographed in NYC, Paris, or Milan, exude that kind of swag.
Here are some pictures of the line. I couldn’t actually find a website.

Stay tuned, ladies. Harvard Yard is slated to release a women’s line soon.
