SCRATCHED January 20 2009

DJ Duel was on deck in Hollywood for indie hip hop artist Ivan Ives' videoshoot. Check him out on the 1s and 2s wearing the classic Make Chicharon Not War tee:

LATIN ACTIVITY January 7 2009

Chankla hooked us up again for a show at House of Blues last night. The valet dudes immediately hassled me about my camera so I have no pictures. To make this post somewhat aesthetic, I photographed our tickets. Haha. If I actually took time to fix the tiny Nikon point-and-shoot, we wouldn't have this problem. Chankla played with Panacea, who rocked some Latin joints and some reggae ones, too. This isn't a biased comment, but they were best. The real treat, however - and I wish I had a picture of this - was an 80 year old man getting down to the sounds. It was like the Buena Vista Social Club up in thurrrrr...

SNAP UR FINGERS January 6 2009

Our friend Chankla (The Big Pill) put me on the guest list for a Monday night show in West Hollywood. He was on the percussions for headliner, Eden Espinosa, and special guest, Tracie Thoms. Though I was stuck in the corner of the bar with limited view, it didn't matter. I was well equipped with a Kobe burger and several Bailey's on the rocks. But more importantly, the music was amazing. Out of their "element", Chankla, Corey, and Eden are still the shit.

'08s Best Musicians

This one was difficult for me. You see, I co-own this cultural brand that's kind of street. I asked myself, is there a particular type of music I'm supposed to be listening to? Should I go tell it on the mountains that I'm really into musical theater, folk/acoustic, and even pop? Then I realized that I really don't care; charge it to eclecticism.

Back to the best of...There's always that one song that got you through a difficult point in your life. There's always that lyric that spoke directly to you. Sometimes just the sound of a song gets you. So for many reasons, we both couldn't pick just one winner. Kim went for the artist, while I went for the album.

KIM - Linkin Park and John Mayer

TRICIA - Kanye West's "808s & Heartbreak" and Jason Mraz's "We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things"

I'm gonna extend this best of post...if Kim were to pick the song of the year, it would be "Shadow of the Day" by Linkin Park. For me, it would be "I Know You by Heart" by Eva Cassidy. I recently heard Eden Espinosa's rendition, and my vote goes to her. Two songs, same reason. We miss you, dude.
