EYE ON LA March 26 2009
I've been dropping hints here and there about the e-zine launching next month (yes, I know I said mid-March, but things get crazy sometimes). The general idea of this expansion is to convey Los Angeles through the eyes of its artists, musicians, designers, store owners, spoken word poets, photographers. For this entry, I'm going to focus on the latter. My cousin Dave recently picked up photography. And like my new project, his subject is the city. It's his goal to photograph the many facets of LA. The pictures below were taken around Downtown in the wee hours of the morning. He did a great job of capturing that part of town. In the future, we will be working together on a lifestyle shoot and also on an interview for the magazine. Enjoy.

THAT NEW NEW March 23 2009
In the online shop now.
RECYCLE
When I was having a conversation about the brand, I used the words "rethink", "recreate", and "reinvent" to describe CA's mission. We consider ourselves a cultural brand that strays away from the stereotypical and the obvious. I shared that conversation with Cokoy who put this design together. Using the universal recycle graphic, we changed the words to include the abovementioned. It's printed on American Apparel's softest t-shirt, in two colors: athletic grey and athletic blue.

We also like to throw some LA culture into our tees. The Dirty Dog is an integral part of the Los Angeles ethos; I captured it with this photo taken in Panorama City. I opted to shoot there instead of Hollywood. There's much more detail involved with off brand napkins hanging off the cart, tagged up street lights and walls, and old school strollers parked nearby. This one is printed on a cotton/polyester blend tee in three colors: heather black, heather forest, and heather plum.

PHO SHIZZLE March 12 2009
Considering that I spend a good chunk of my time enjoying Los Angeles eateries, I've never had pho (cue the WHAAATs?? right now). My closest encounter with it was through prank calling. My younger cousin and I used to pretend we were old Vietnamese ladies looking for Pho 999. So we'd call local businesses with heavy accents and ask for directions. Fast forward to last weekend when I was invited to Alhambra for some pho. Pho 79 to be exact. It was just as everyone told me it would be...so good. But I did learn that it's even better when washed down with a bottle of Tsingtao.

INFLATION March 5 2009
I would consider LA as one of the cities with a better parking system. Establishments usually have their own parking lots, and if you end up on a street like Melrose Ave or Ventura Blvd, there are meters or residential areas. With the exception of some locations, metered parking is cheap - a quarter an hour, free after 6pm, and no charge on Sundays.A couple months ago, I noticed an increase in the cost of meters around LA. White stickers were slapped on to indicate $2.00 per hour. That's a huge leap from the quarter. I don't even carry that much change! And then recently, I began to notice new parking signs and new payment kiosks. Dollar bills and credit cards are now accepted to accomodate the price hike. But only certain streets have those high tech machines. Others are still old school, meaning that the quarter sitting in your car's console is only worth a whopping 8 minutes.
I no longer consider LA to have a decent parking system.
