RIDE OR DIE January 21 2009
Happy birthday to an integral part of our crew, Cokoy (aka Cokizzles, Cokeeezes, C-Nastay). Cokoy's responsible for a lot of CA's multimedia efforts - videos, photos, whatever. 95% of the time she's on her mini HD cam or blinding us with a camera flash. She's also responsible for the newfound jargon the team has acquired. She has given new meaning to phrases such as "This is crazy salty" or "That was quick", so we often find ourselves thinking of other ways to say simple things. Hence the name C-Nastay...Here's to another good year. Thanks for being so frickin' hardcore.

ONE OF A KIND January 12 2009
When I was in New York a couple years ago, I wanted to visit the Nike ID Studio. The concept was fairly new, yet New Yorkers and the like caught wind of it quickly. Appointments were backed up for months, and I didn't get a chance to design my shoe. Last year, the Nike Sportswear pop up shop opened in Hollywood at the Montalban Theater. They offered Tuesday night movie screenings, a small sportswear collection, art exhibits, and an ID studio. Like the east coast, Angelenos booked their hour design slots well in advance. Kim and I finally had our turn last weekend.

There's something about the classic Old English font that is so gangsta. It's used on tattoos, on the walls when tagging a crew name, on apparel when representing territory. I've always been drawn to the ornate capital letters, diamond shaped serifs, and the thick black lines. From what I understand, it was the font used when Gutenberg printed the first Bible. It has obviously proved to be timeless. We use the font for our personal marketing campaign. Kim rocks a silver necklace with the initials 'CA'. She gets a lot of inquiries about it like "CA for California?". It leads to conversation that inevitably ends with a plug about the brand. For me, I went with the 90s buckle belt that I used to wear as a teenager. I had to go to the Panorama City swap meet for that one. Told you it's gangsta...

COFFEE AND CIGS January 8 2009
At the end of November, I met with Matt (Rhythm Natives, Lifeswell) for a brainstorming session about the biz. He and the boys wanted to expand by adding clothing to their name. We talked strategy and collaboration, and then December happened. It was a busy month for us with the holiday release, and stocking Beatrock and Backside. Matt and I were bound to reconvene.Last night we caught up by sharing new developments, exploring the idea of snap back caps, and setting the stage for Lifeswell x Chicharon Adventures. February is looking bright.
