COLLECTIVE AESTHETICS August 14 2009

In their second group show, Collective Aesthetics took the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk by storm. With featured work by Mr. 44, Benjie, Oddzoo, Proto, and our friend, Alex Rapada, the Santee Court Alley was transformed into an art space of exploding creativity. Props to the CA family for putting on such a successful show. And of course, props to Alex. We’re proud of you! Now, enjoy our 20+ picture coverage of the evening.

ALOHA June 30 2009

Kim and I made a quick trip to Beatrock last Sunday to support their latest art installation featuring Hawaii’s own, Pancho Abalos. We were only able to stay for a little bit, so we missed out on the cupcakes and The Parks Finest, but Pancho’s work was well worth it. The space was an explosion of color, intricately set against Pancho’s captivating characters. See for yourself.

Beatrock actually released some exclusive merchandise for the event which included t-shirts, prints, and stickers. Pancho is very open to seeing his work on apparel, so we plan to work with him in the near future.

It’s tradition that when we visit the store, we take shots with the Beatrock team. Sunday was no exception. Besides, there’s a lot to toast about - life, art, community, and MJ.

Fatgums on deck. Beatrock is releasing his “A Peaceful Riot” (with Bambu) on vinyl this coming August. If you are a record enthusiast, make sure you keep your eyes open for this.

REALISM June 10 2009

By now you should have soaked in the new site. It's a completely different look from the previous one, and that's exactly what we wanted. I like to call it maturity. What I am most proud of is the launch of the CA E-zine. This feature accomplishes one of my own personal goals - to be a writer. So I get to do that, and meet really interesting people that shape the City of Angels. When version 4.0 went live last Friday morning, we had published two completed interviews. One of them was with painter, Justin Bua.

This was a real treat for me, to get to interact with the guy that painted the art on my own walls. As I wrote in the Q&A, I've admired his work for a long time. It falls into the category of "art that I prefer". I can appreciate the pieces of great classical artists, but I admittedly find them hard to relate to. Bua tells stories, stories of places I know, stories of people that I myself have come across. To establish that connection through canvas is quite a feat.

So if you haven't had a chance to read about him, please do so here. I only hope that his art speaks to you as much as it has to me.

ONLY IN SF March 31 2009

I hope you're not tired of reading posts about San Fran, but my SD card is packed with blogging material from that trip.

Our hotel was adjacent to the San Francisco Museum of Craft + Design, so we decided to visit that place before walking all over the city. They were currently running an exhibit called "San Francisco Graphic Design". I didn't know that SF was known for graphic design. Let me rephrase that - I didn't know that any city was known for graphic design. Apparently SF based designers have created some of the most famed logos, packaging, websites, etc. The exhibit featured a range of that cross disciplinary work. We enjoyed it, though I must admit that sometimes I concentrate too much on how my pictures look instead of the art.

THIS IS LOS ANGELES February 26 2009

For the rest of this month, SURU on Melrose Ave is host to Estevan Oriol's photo exhibit called "This is Los Angeles". It was pretty amazing, especially the moving display. In my opinion, no one captures raw emotion like Oriol.
