BACK TO THE 08

My prayers have been answered. Ever since I watched Back to the Future Part II in 1989, I wished and wished for a Hover Board. I was 8 with an obvious false sense of reality. I truly believed that I would float if I had it. Today, the Mattel Hover Board made its way to eBay (coincidentally around the sale of the highly coveted Nike Hyperdunk 2015). Starting bid? $30k. I think that might be more expensive than the DeLorean DMC-12. In case you don't remember how Marty McFly made me want the Hover Board, here it is in action:

And if you care to know how the auction goes, you can follow it here.

I never got a Starter jacket or cap when I was growing up. I remember asking for a Lakers or Raiders one, but instead I had to settle for a Domino's Pizza cycling cap (which I wore with the bill ALWAYS snapped up). It must be because the brand got so associated with the 'gang' lifestyle. Headlines of police seeking someone in a Starter jacket were common, and they were featured in such films such as Boyz n' the Hood. And so they started to phase out.

A couple years ago, I started seeing the brand (sans the team names) at Wal-Mart. They offered simple athletic gear, but nothing to go crazy over like when I was 9. Then just late last year, I saw it on Hypebeast, The Hundreds, and Greyone. I thought, okay, maybe these lucky guys have exclusive contracts. And then, I see this:

Given my interest in all things 90s, this is good news. I hope that CA can get a jacket soon. So if you're reading this, Starter Black Label, we'd LOVE one in black.

ZACK ATTACK

I must admit...I've been on a Saved by the Bell kick lately. Much to my amusement, TBS has episodes in syndication every morning. Besides Zack and Kelly, "Beautiful Dreamer" at the all city sing, and the Malibu Beach Club, I've been noticing the style of the six friends. I'm drawn to the neon colors, the acid wash and colored denim, the high tops, striped tees, and all over prints. It's pretty obvious that the abovementioned items are back on the scene. Just take a look at the opening credits; one of the patterns highly resembles the Air Jordan cement print:

But it was the "Barbara Ann" episode that really made me think about the style. Check it out:

The boys were sporting the shutter shades (with matching tanks)!

Enough of my analytical 90s TV rant, and back to the rap version of Snow White.

Thrifty

Dec 05

On Wednesday mornings, I usually go to this thrift store in the valley and try to find some deals. I’ve always been infatuated with things vintage, so I try to get ideas for reprinting on old t-shirts, or incorporating some weird prints that I see. I’ve been successful with some items (which you’ll see in a few months). But most of the time, I’m picking up stuff for myself.

So today, I got this old ski sweater with a very odd print that will likely be my Christmas sweater. I also copped these sunglasses that my aunt probably wore while driving the black Camaro back in the day. I spent a total of $4.97. You’ll find me back there next week.

[edit] I showed my mom the sunglasses and she was very excited to see that the brand was Oleg Cassini. I had to look him up; for a dollar, I got some sunglasses by a designer who hooked up former first lady, Jackie O. Niiice.
