CHANGES October 6 2011
I visited Eric and Jojo at Backside (Burbank) yesterday. I haven’t blogged about them in a minute, so if you’re just getting hip to CA, you should know that I do marketing for the retail space. It’s not something that I have to do in house, so seeing them and the new stuff they’ve got in stock is always a treat. The shop is going through a lot of changes - mostly aesthetic, some product, and all for the better.
They are starting to buy more bags so a new display was needed. They’re carrying Herschel now.

On the other side of the counter are snapbacks and fitteds from Mitchell & Ness, Primitive, Stussy, et al.

They have a bigger women’s section now, and have expanded to include brands like Dimepiece. (YESSSS!)

This is what tripped me out. I’ve always known Backside to have music posters on every wall. Figures - Backside was a music store from jump. But I looked up yesterday and saw that one of the walls was bare. Tupac’s “All Eyez on Me” wasn’t staring at me anymore. Eric has conceptualized new product for the store that requires those visuals to be taken down. Stay tuned for what it is; it’s pretty cool.

The vinyl section is now stocked with 45s.

And finally upstairs, where most performances would happen, is a new radio set up. Indie 100 Digital Radio (formerly KYHY Burbank Radio) has given Jojo a daily show. They are in a transition period right now, so his on air hours are scattered.

LIKE TOTALLY October 5 2011
The Rhythm Natives are performing a free show tomorrow night at home, the 818, the valley, at Scotland Yard in Canoga Park. It’s pretty rare that they play in their own backyard; they’re normally booked elsewhere in California. They go on at 11p. Come through, vibe with them, and have a Sunny Tea with me. If you don’t know what that is, then you better go. Trust.

Here’s how it kinda looked at Rick & Ray’s monthly getdown. Full coverage is on LIFESWELL. Peace to everyone that came through especially the guest DJs, Lady Sha and JeffCee. Mark your calendar, the next one is on October 27 - same spot, same rules. All photos by Alexis Baylosis.

COUNTING COLORS October 1 2011
The photos below are unedited; that’s actually how the transforming sky looked last night on a drive from DTLA into the valley. I nearly broke my neck counting all the colors.
