EACH STEP BECOMES ELEVATED July 30 2011
There’s flier over on the right for our friends at ESBE Clothing. I’ve dropped that brand name a few times on the blog since they frequent the events that I document. Tonight, they’re throwing their own party at 86 Clothing in West Covina for an in-store launch. It’ll also feature a live performance by General Monks (Planet Asia and TriState). I took time to ask one of the owners, SB, some questions about the line and its connection to music. Check it out HERE.

LUCKY NUMBER 7 July 28 2011
Tonight, you can catch us at Blu Monkey for Rick & Ray‘s seventh installment of LIFESWELL, and this one’s highly celebrated.

For one, the Rhythm Natives are premiering their music video for the track, Make Up Your Mind. (Click the title to get a free download of the song.) Getting to this point - a completed music video - took quite a long time. The sigh of relief was probably echoed through Los Angeles when Oishi Media showed them the first cut. You have a chance to see it before it hits the internets on Monday.
Next, JustPudge is dropping Volume One of the LIFESWELL mix series. The first 35 people at Blu Monkey get a physical copy of the CD. If you’re one of them, you’ll be treated to three bonus/unreleased tracks that are not on the digital download (available tomorrow). Pudge isn’t only celebrating this release; it’s also his birthday. So if you’re around tonight, buy the dude a drink. He deserves it.
SB of ESBE Clothing is also celebrating his birthday. We’ve known SB for a little bit and he has been a true supporter of everything we do around here. I’ll be dropping an interview with him about his brand and his work with some of hip-hop’s most notable artists in the next couple days.
And finally, Rick & Ray has created a solid DJ lineup to help soundtrack the evening. Residents SoSuperSam and JustPudge are in attendance. And so are guests JB and AsIs, who is fresh off the RedBull Thr3style competition. See ya later, alligator!

SOUL DOG July 27 2011
I was “off” last night, meaning no meetings scheduled. On nights like that, I usually take care of personal stuff - running errands, catching up on Keeping Up With the Kardashians TV, or just taking a break. I was on my way to run said errands, when I got a text from Wella. She was in the valley getting ready to eat at Otis Jackson’s Soul Dog. Since nothing ever really gets in the way of me and food, I turned the car around and went to North Hollywood.
I’m usually skeptical about fancy hot dog places like this. I’m perfectly fine with the dirty dog, or a Dodger dog, or even the Costco dog. But this place is quite good. It takes your favorite soul food dishes and uses them as toppings over a hot dog. I ordered the mac n’ cheese one. Yah, mac n’ cheese. Glen ordered from the non-dog menu and had a fried chicken plate with cornbread, okra, and sweet potato fries. That all sounds super heavy, but it wasn’t. In fact, Soul Dog makes it known that they’re health conscious with no nitrates, no preservatives, etc. I’d definitely go back and try the Original. Collard green slaw and sweet potato puree toppings? Yes, please.

DECK THE WALLS July 26 2011
I’ve been trying to redecorate for a minute now. I’ve bought new artwork, but they haven’t been framed and put up. I’m waiting until I find one more piece that goes with a set that I’ve created (David Flores’ Max from Where the Wild Things Are, and Rich Pellegrino’s Marty McFly). But that’s the thing about purchasing art; you don’t force it, you just kind of connect with something and then boom. The same goes for buying skateboards. You see, I want to hang skateboards on the wall. I wouldn’t call myself a skater skater, but it was a huge part of my childhood and a therapeutic activity as an adult. I just can’t decide on another board I want up.
I have these: Girl x Hello Kitty and Diamond x Sade.

They have collected dust as I wait to be connected to that one deck. And then as I was surfing the internets last night, I saw this:

Santa Cruz, get out of here with that! I’ve watched Bart Simpson skate through Springfield for so many years. In fact, I would always pick Bart in The Simpsons game for the simple reason that he had a skateboard as a weapon. Therefore, you can imagine the nostalgia I feel with this release. Except that it doesn’t solve my redecorating problem. I would just ride it, especially since it’s a complete.
