MAY EDITION May 31 2011
I had a whirlwind of a weekend that started last Thursday, and I’ve got a lot to share on here. So I’m going to start backwards. Here is coverage from the fifth installment of LIFESWELL. These were taken by DJ Erok (Rick and Ray) who - even though it was his damn birthday - still covered the evening on the floor and in the photo booth AND spun a pretty memorable new jack swing set.

TweetCAPSULE May 29 2011
Last weekend, Capsule Barbershop (on Melrose and Heliotrope) had its grand opening. I was in the bay at the time and couldn’t celebrate with Jay-P and Vince, so I visited the shop to see how everything came together. I was around when things were still being torn down and built up. I saw what it was, and now I’ve seen what it is.
Originally from Toronto, Vince came to Los Angeles to pursue his barbering career. He has since become the official barber of the Jabbawockeez, New Boyz, Devin Ebanks/Derrick Caracter/Ron Artest of the Lakers, and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat. He and Jay-P have known each other for a while, and partnered up to open Capsule.
Capsule is a full on barbershop with five stations and a shampoo area. They offer cuts and shaves. It’s also a retail space (my dude Bojo is the buyer), and its walls will rotate LA based artists (right now it’s Proto of Collective Aesthetics). Congrats to Jay-P and Vince. CHASE DREAMS.

WEEKEND PLANS May 27 2011
This is going to be a good Memorial Day weekend.
First, Backside Echo Park celebrates its Grand Opening with a free concert at The Echo on Sunday, May 29. I’ve known Eric for years now, I’ve seen the Burbank location evolve, and I’ve been part of their team for the last two years. So to see Backside grow with a new space is very fulfilling for me.

Secondly, Bambu has his homecoming concert with the final Smuggler’s Tour Stop at The Roxy on Monday, May 30. Joining him on the bill are Thurzday, Rhythm Natives, and Malcolm & Martin. This stop is fully sponsored by my creative management company, Rick & Ray. This is the first time we’ve done something like this, so come to the show and share this moment with me! You can get tickets HERE.

TONIGHT IS YOUR NIGHT BRO May 26 2011
Tonight is the fifth installment of LIFESWELL at Blu Monkey. The original idea for the event was a monthly fuse of live music and DJs, using some of the best talent coming out of Los Angeles. So far, it’s been a success with Rhythm Natives, Christine Alane, Miss Jenn K, and Thurzday. And now it’s going to be K.O. The Legend.

I met K.O. at the Soul Assassins studio several months ago. He’s a quadruple threat in the industry as a writer, producer, artist, and DJ. That work ethic has earned him a resume that boasts names like Power 106, Amerie, Destiny’s Child, KRS One, Britney Spears, Paul Oakenfold, and Leighton Meester. Right now, he’s working on his third mixtape slated to release in the summer, and he’s also part of the group The Totally Wow, headed by Balthazar Getty. I thought I had a lot of shit on my plate…
Come through tonight to see him in his artist element. Doors at LIFESWELL open at 9p. In between now and then, you can also download K.O.‘s mixtape, “The 1-8-1-6 Tape Vol 1: Beats & Bars”, HERE.
