TOP RAMEN May 4 2010

We met with Gerard last night over Daikokuya in Little Tokyo. The first time I went there, I wasn’t too excited about it because I was sort of forced to have lunch at a time when I disliked ramen. But people can change…

I judge Japanese restaurants by their gyoza. Daiko passed with flying colors.

That’s the kotteri style ramen, meaning extra back fat flavor. Mmmmmm.

Faith reminded me to order their fried spicy tuna.

JB was not too far away, so he paid us a visit during dinner. He let us in on some collaboration news going on with RIF.LA.

OFF THE WALL May 3 2010

I pass by the Vans tent on Topanga Canyon almost everyday, but never pull over to check it out. It amazes me though. Here was this tent, comparable to the size of my bedroom, with a gang of trendsetters, skaters, and sneakerheads always inside looking to spend their money. I finally visited it today because my all white errrythang authentics were super dirty, and a half size too small. I wish I knew some history about the store - like how long it had been there, etc, but the sales associate I was talking to didn’t know too much. I picked up the off white joints and was very happy.

VERY FITTING May 2 2010

When I visited the Philippines in 2008, I spent one of my days there helping to build a house under Gawad Kalinga, a community development foundation for the impoverished of the Philippines. It was a very humbling experience digging and transporting cement in the middle of a storm; it was something I’d never forget.

On that same trip, I learned about a Filipino-owned cap brand through some friends called WIP CAPS. They had an interesting mission. Their name stood for “Working Intently to Phase-out Corruption, Apathy, Poverty, and Selfishness”.

Now both entities have teamed up to fund raise for the youth of the Philippines under GK’s Child and Youth Development program which aims to keep the youth away from gangs and drugs. The Manila Rice fitted baseball cap, inspired by sacks of rice, dropped yesterday. Under the bill features a quote by Tony Meloto, founder of GK, that reads “Rise as a nation, help ourselves, dream our own dreams, care for those among our people who have lost their capacity to dream.” You can only purchase the cap at www.wipcaps.com. Check it out when you can and support a cause close to us.

REMIND ME May 1 2010

I haven’t had much time to “play” these days. I am usually able to keep a mental calendar, but it’s been hectic lately and I’ve had to rely on my Blackberry. Today, I’m relying on the blog for those things I need to do - all tagged with “fun” and “Los Angeles”.

David Choe’s Nothing to Declare at Lazarides Gallery in Beverly Hills (til May 23)

Photo

Skateboard Evolution and Art in California at the California Heritage Museum (til May 30)

Bansky’s “Exit Through the Gift Shop” (currently playing at Hollywood Arclight)

Los Angles Asian Pacific Film Festival (I’m hoping to catch a few films this week; it ends on Saturday)
