ADD DESCRIPTION April 5 2010

When I posted the Spring 2010 line last week, I didn’t give much of a description, just the title. I like talking about our tees and telling you why we printed the ones we did. So here goes:

THROW IT UP
To put it simply, we wanted to do another photo shirt. We had been surrounded by many LA ones with the same photographed or graphically rendered concept. So we took that trend and flipped it to represent the brand and our home state. I asked Kim to get acrylics with dark nail polish so we can shoot her throwing up CA on a street in Los Angeles. We wanted the design to warrant a gangster type of feeling. So to complete it, our designers created the font for “Chicharon Adventures” by studying a lot of tattoo work. The tee is available in white.

THE FOREVER YOUNG
I think this one’s my favorite. When we started CA, I had always used “forever young” to describe the team (I even use it to describe myself). I had talked about this design two years ago, but was never committed to a concept. We did, however, put it on a special tee we did in ’09 for Fed, one of our original team members who we lost in ’08. But that was a suuuuper exclusive run. So I revisited the idea, and I thought to use something from my youth to design it. We started with The Karate Kid font, and that got thrown out quick. So all of us continued to brainstorm, and finally agreed on “The Wonder Years”.  It works out well because in a sense I’m living the wonder years all over again. The tee is available in black and heather grey.

NO 25
We took a vintage Chanel ad for this one. It was an ad for their now famed perfume – a totally different campaign than their current ones because it was strictly text. They advertised their perfume using a full length description that included their name, key selling points, and a smorgasbord of adjectives.  There was a bit of confusion when designing this one. Kim and I were on two totally different pages. She was thinking of an ad for the brand as a whole, while I was thinking of an ad for an actual t-shirt (think “pure Los Angeles ethos” vs. “locally made”). Hers made more sense. We call it No 25 because it’s the 25th tee we’ve printed. On it is an abridged version of our mission statement, with a few other things to describe CA as a clothing brand, as a blog, as an e-zine, and as a creative launch pad. It’s available in white and silver.

This just might be my favorite run ever. We went the simpler route; testament to our maturity, I guess. Thank you again to all that worked on this line. We have a great crew behind us. All tees available in the shop now.

Let’s get started on Summer.

THE OTHER WHITE MEAT April 4 2010

Me and my fam headed to the best dim sum in the valley for Easter Sunday, at A&W Seafood in Reseda. Out of the things I gave up for 40 days - red meat, pork, and alcohol - I missed pork the most. You can imagine how happy I was eating shumai. Next few stops - Pho 79 for some charbroiled pork pho, El Buen Gusto for pupusas con chicharron, and my parents house for homecooked Filipino food. Not all today, though…

BILLIARD BIRTHDAY April 2 2010

Last week, we were at Hollywood Billiards to celebrate our good friend, Gerard’s, birthday. By day, Gerard is an amazing graphic designer and photographer (he has done photographs and consulting for us in the past). By night, he’s a kung fu AND boxing master. Quite the combination…He and I went to elementary school together, and it was a treat seeing old friends. As for me shooting pool, that wasn’t such a treat.

LINE FEAST April 1 2010

I was unsuccessful on my first try with an LA food truck festival. So, I tried again. This time at the Americana in Glendale for “Street Feast”. I thought I had a chance; I assumed people would be discouraged because it didn’t include as many food options, and the space at Americana isn’t that spacious. It was the exact opposite. Less food options meant longer lines. The small space meant claustrophobia. In turn, I didn’t enjoy any of the food. Food festivals - 2, me - 0.
