THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE March 26 2010

I took the name of this entry from one of my favorite tees by Obey...I generally like my tees the same way I like my music - with some sort of message. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing deep about Ludacris’ “My Chick Bad” but I still like it. It’s just lyrically, I prefer some thought. Same as tees. My wardrobe is basically made up of CA and solids, and then you’d find rarities like the above mentioned Obey tee, and those rare gems invoke thought.

One of the sites I regularly visit is Jeff Staple’s Staple Design. Late last week, he dropped photos of the first batch of his Spring 2010 line. The theme in this run is appropriately called “EconMajor”. In Staple’s own words and design, it explores the juxtaposition of creativity and the economy, and what the economy has done to people. The medium is the message, and here it’s apparent that while creativity has been unleashed, so has people’s grievances. Well done in my book. Here are four of my favorites from this batch.

SEX FOR YOUR EARS March 25 2010

Gotta give credit where credit is due…I borrowed the title of this entry from my boy Glenn’s blog. You should follow him on twitter, he’s hilarious. Anyways, here’s some music the crew has been listening to today. Enjoy.

And because I heart each and every one of you, bless yourself with this leak of Erykah Badu’s new album “New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)” HERE.

VOCALIZE March 24 2010

I was in the studio last night with Rhythm Natives for one of their final vocal sessions. This time, it included Bambu and Johneric (The Fighting Cocks, The Park’s Finest). I tweeted about it, and I’ll say it again: quote me now, this album is going to be ridiculous.

BAMBU x ARMORY x KMB SD March 23 2010

Bambu and Armory Hip Hop, in partnership with community organization Kabataang maka-Bayan San Diego (KmB-SD), have created 3 t-shirt collaborations that dropped today.

The collaboration is a natural fit - the Armory plays an active role in honoring and preserving the true roots of hip hop by recognizing the patrons and respective blocks as its backbone, while Bambu’s music speaks to the experiences of those who are raised in these neighborhoods. The collaboration is anchored by KmB-SD, a progressive grassroots organization that works with the youth to educate and empower them toward local and global social change.

The bold and striking designs were inspired by verses off of Bambu’s latest EP, “…paper cuts…”. Each design is available in both black and white.

“ORIGINAL GUNSLINGER” What’s your survival gear? This design is remnant of BAMBU x FATGUMS EP, A Peaceful Riot (Gunslinger) combined with the hook from “Slow Down”. This piece speaks to what happens when the money GETS LOW. Bottom line: stay sharp & stay strapped (metaphorically speaking). During these tough times we must be precise & get educated about our rights to SURVIVE and RESIST.

“THE QUEEN IS DEAD” “BOOM BYE BYE…This is why I don’t refer to women as queens/cuz you got fingers like me, to squeeze an M16.” Say goodbye to the contradiction & exploitation; demand the RESPECT for the women in our lives. The sacrifice. The revolutionary…“I’ll call you a soldier instead!”

Photo

“I BELIEVE IN THE BLOCK” A subtle bar in “Slow Down,” yet a powerful principle & ideology. Simply put, rep your block, rep where you’re from! Progress is made when we anchor ourselves in the community & stand shoulder to shoulder. If we don’t believe in our block, whom will? So, where do you stand? & What’s your location!?!!
