SHOOT, EDIT, PRINT February 23 2010

We spent some of the weekend preparing for our Spring 2010 release. As I’ve mentioned before, our process is a bit unconventional. We are doing another photo shirt (last year’s was Dirty Dogs), and used a street in Silverlake as the setting. I’m going to try to not give too much away, though the pictures may speak for themselves. Expect our Spring line to hit mid-March.

HIS HOLINESS February 22 2010

Yesterday, I watched the Dalai Lama’s talk at the Gibson Amphitheater, where he spoke about the human condition and the importance of cultivating compassion. I couldn’t bring the SLR in, so here are some photos taken by the Blackberry and the iPhone. It was an amazing afternoon, and I wish all our readers the opportunity to see and hear him. He’s not only a real funny guy, but I guarantee that he will share wisdom that you will use in your life. Stay inspired.

ADAM February 21 2010

Hollywood Video did me solid this weekend; their going out of business sale gave me a chance to stock up on some DVDs. I picked up an independent movie that I wanted to see but never got around to it - Adam.

I don’t think I’ve done a movie review since Where the Wild Things Are, so here I am with this one. It’s not your typical romantic comedy (think 500 Days of Summer). It’s original, funny, and doesn’t rehash many of the tired plot lines from past romantic comedies where boy meets girl, loses girl, gets girl, etc. Adam has Asperger’s Syndrome, and therefore doesn’t know how to express his attraction to his new neighbor, Beth. He uses unconventional romance to win her - creating a homemade planetarium, taking her to see raccoons in their unnatural habitat, and washing her windows in full on astronaut gear. In return, she teaches him the ways of the world. The story is all very clever and from what I understand, very real in its representation of the disorder. But what I enjoyed most is the performance by Hugh Dancy who plays Adam. His mannerisms and dialogue drew me in so much that I really felt his pain and shared his joy.

It won at Sundance last year, the DVD was only $5.99, and it opens up with a quote from one of my favorite books “The Little Prince”. It’s much better than some of the other stuff out there. Yeah, I’m still talking about you, Avatar.

GIVE February 19 2010

Ever since high school, Backside in Burbank has been a store that I frequently patron. It started as the neighborhood music shop, where bands like Linkin Park performed when they were just getting their feet wet. The spot, lined with an amazing collection of music posters, was the go to place for used CDs and vinyl. It has since evolved into a boutique store that includes your favorite streetwear brands. A true sign of the times, as the music industry makes its digital shift. But that’s not what this is about.

For as long as I can remember, Eric was the face of Backside. He was always behind the counter. His hustle paid off; he is now part owner, and helped make the store what it is now. We owe a lot of our success to him. He assisted us in getting the brand out, in understanding street trends, he even took our product to sell.

Last year, Eric was diagnosed with a brain tumor. And thankfully after two surgeries, it was completely removed. But it’s far from over. He has incurred quite a hefty hospital bill. I’m sharing his website to all our readers with the hope that you will give. Give thought, give prayer, give positive energy, give a dollar. Please always do your part to help your brothers and sisters. Thank you for reading.
