AND THE NOMINEES ARE… January 31 2010

I went to a Grammy party last Friday night that featured some of my favorite names in R&B - Foreign Exchange, Eric Roberson, Robert Glasper, and Bilal. They celebrated their nods at Club 740 in Downtown LA by performing to a packed house. DJs included Rashida and Vikter Duplaix. I don’t know if QuestLove or Chad Hugo of The Neptunes spun because I got kicked out (I also missed Erro’s performance). I snuck my way up to the VIP area to see the view from the top and to rub elbows. I succeeded in both quests, so it was all worth it.

5 DOLLA MAKE YOU HOLLA January 30 2010

I can easily say that my favorite restaurant in the LA area is Katana, a robata and sushi bar on the Sunset Strip of West Hollywood. They have a $5 happy hour that I tried for the first time late this week. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me since the restaurant opened.

FULL TILT January 29 2010

One of my favorite graffiti artists visited one of my favorite cities. Upon hearing that Tilt would visit Manila, Kid Robot commissioned him to take their 2010 spring line and photograph the apparel using his own vision. They’ve put together a lookbook of what was shot during the trip. I was always more into tagging words, and not so much on the graphics. The French artist, with his bubble like style, really influenced me on how to develop my hobby. Although it was short-lived, I attribute my a lot of my sketchbook, napkin, and legal paper work to him. It’s good that I didn’t pursue it because now, Tilt uses naked women as his medium, and that’s really not my steeze…

Anyways, here are some of my favorite photos from Manila. You can see the rest HERE. It’s great to know that the city is making headway in what I call the era of urban art.

JD SALINGER January 29 2010

Photo

“If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.”

I’m going to take that same attitude of Holden Caulfield and not really get into it for this entry. If you hadn’t heard already, JD Salinger - author of one of my favorite books, “Catcher in the Rye” - has died. This news may not matter to most, as he already seemed gone having withdrawn from public life decades ago. But all I have to say is that as far as shaping perspectives, Catcher was probably one of the most influential literary works. Amidst the cynicism and phoniness, Holden was THE advocate of being forever young.

I’ll end this one the same way I started it. But this time, with one of my favorite lines.

“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it.” - JD Salinger, Catcher in the Rye

THE ESSENTIALS (PART TWO) January 28 2010

Kim, CA’s Chief of Operations, lets you in on her daily essentials.

Starbucks and diet soda
How does the saying go? “Water is the drink of life.” But for me, water isn’t a favorite; there is no enticing flavor. I would probably go through withdrawals without at least one grande mocha, nonfat, with whip a day. It’s a great pick me up on those days when you can’t seem to get it going, and it’s great to warm you up on cold LA days. If I’m not drinking a cup of java, it’s probably a diet beverage. Diet Coke or Diet Dr. Pepper is preferred.

Blackberry and bluetooth
I don’t think I’d survive without my bluetooth headset. It seems weird now to hold up the phone to my ear when everything can be hands free. My Blackberry keeps me connected with everything and everyone. Be it for business or social networking, it keeps me up to date with everything that’s going on.

Franklin Covey organizer
Though I’m glad for the technological advancement made over the years, I’m still old school when it comes to scheduling and to do lists. I like physically writing things down and crossing things off my list. The Rhythm Natives constantly make fun of me when I bring this thing out, but I love my organizer.

Photo

Sunglasses
This is an essential part of any outfit. However, I don’t only wear it for fashion purposes. Bright light and the glare that it comes with is not the biz.

Photo

Books
Instead of using movies as an escape, a good book does well enough. I read anything from coffee table style reads, to classics, to history, to chick lit. I’m currently reading “Have a Little Faith” by Mitch Albom (even though the picture doesn’t indicate that).
