TEE TIME December 24 2009
We’re obviously into t-shirts around here…
So for this part of the best of oh nine series, we’re picking our two favorite t-shirts (non CA) of the year. A lot of factors go into the selection - colorway, design, message. Kim and I both focused on the latter, choosing two tees from Freshjive.
KIM: “Faded Hope” release by the now logo-less brand. Initially, people were banking on an ideal with no consideration of any other factors, and now we’re suffering from disillusionment. This t-shirt captures that feeling.

TRICIA: “China”. When I was at USC, I was asked to write a paper on what I thought was the most interesting consequence of globalization. I wrote about China’s emergence as a superpower. We have very intricate relations with the country - some good and some bad. Either way you look at it, the United States has lost its self-reliance. Have we become a pawn of China? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Here’s to USC Political Science majors.

(TWO) SONGS OF THE YEAR December 23 2009
To continue our best of oh nine series, Kim and I chose what we felt was the best song of the year. There were a lot to choose from, and a lot to overlook. There was Drake, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas, Mayer Hawthorne, The Roots, and Kings of Leon. There was the death of auto-tune, the partying in the USA, and girls on the dance floor. Amidst all the reflection, we succeeded in choosing our top pick.
KIM: “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys. Even though we’re not from New York, that it’s a great city anthem. Los Angeles based musicians need to follow suit; Tupac released Live and Die in LA in 1996!
TRICIA: “Make her Say” by Kid Cudi featuring Kanye West and Common. These guys flipped Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and made it into an unforgettable hip hop track. It’s lyrically strong (especially Kanye’s verse), but what gets me is the backdrop of beats that remind me of why I fell in love with music.

MMMMMMMM December 22 2009
Christine Alane, Ivy, Jon, and I were at the Ryan Leslie and Robin Thicke concert last night at Club Nokia. It was my first time there, and I know it’s not my last. I have grown to really appreciate smaller venues like that. For one, the sound in there was on point. You could feel the bass underneath your feet from anywhere in the room. And because it’s a small place, the production value is a lot less, meaning that the music is the sole focus. There was nothing fancy about it; just straight up R&B (and a whole lotta screaming ladies). The two artists put on a bad ass show. Please note that the pictures don’t do it justice.
RLes’ set was short, but worth it to see one of the most underrated artists on the stage. His mix of Roger and Zapp’s “I Wanna be your Man” and his “Valentine” was amazing.

As for Robin Thicke, I’m honestly speechless. Game and Kid Cudi surprised the audience, but I’m not going to detail the show. It may not be appropriate, though the title of this entry may indicate how I felt throughout it. Just take the name of his newest album and let your imagination run free.
