GASTROPUBBIN’ November 30 2009

We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday. Before going off to our respective families, I treated the team to our own Thanksgiving dinner at The Lab in LA. I haven’t posted about a new restaurant in a minute, so here goes. The Lab took the place of Sizzler (mmm, cheese bread) on Figueroa across from USC. Back when me and Kim went there, we didn’t have much of a good selection. There was the campus bar, and two other dives in the area that were in desperate need of renovation. You can say it’s a sign of the times, I guess. Because SC is now undergoing a bit of a makeover to keep up with the trend - putting up new buildings like a gastropub for their students. The “gastropub” is a really cool concept. Cheap drinks and higher end food. The Lab boasts an amazing beer and wine menu, all for under 10 bucks. And their food is American cuisine. I really like it there. So does the crew.

RESPECT November 25 2009

Being the day before the holiday, I thought I’d get into the spirit and post about this dude named Efren Penaflorida.

Photo

He is this year’s recipient of the CNN Hero Award, and he’s from my dad’s hometown in the Philippines. A lot of the youth there easily become part of gangs, sometimes because of pressure, other times because of poverty. According to local human rights groups, membership continues to surge. Efren offers an alternative to that lifestyle, through a pushcart classroom. Every Saturday, he and his team roam the slums teaching children reading, writing, and math. The group also runs a hygiene clinic, where kids can get a bath and learn how to brush their teeth. The goal was to divert the youth from gangs and show them other forms of productivity, like education. So far, Efren has mentored over one thousand children, each of them crediting him for bringing them back to life.

Everyday people can change the world. I’m thankful for that.

BOLD November 24 2009

Freshjive is bringing heat with their latest:

I wonder if this release will bring as much controversy as the pro-Palestinian tees of 2008. Those caused such an uproar within the Los Angeles Jewish community; will “Hope Fading Fast?” warrant the same behavior amongst democrats?

Whatever the case, I applaud Rick Klotz et al. I neither agree nor disagree with the t-shirt, I just think it’s a bold move on their part. First off, the imagery is so profound. One of the most definitive images of the millennium has been destroyed. Secondly, I respect anyone who despite the consensus, can stand up for their beliefs. Freshjive is good for that. Examples include their move to go logo-less, and their informative column called “The World’s Got Problems” that I read often. The reasoning behind this release is listed there. More than anything, the site has integrated politics and streetwear, educating their supporters about issues beyond colorways and bad ass design.

The t-shirt has become the medium.
