STARTING TONIGHT October 26 2009
I didn’t get a chance to blog all weekend. It was rather uneventful, considering that I spent most of it moving, building, measuring, etc. Some of us did head over to the Dimepiece event last Saturday; pictures will be up soon. For now, get ready for the Rhythm Natives who are playing live at the Dragonfly for Hollywood Art Walk. Tonight marks their three show series for the week. Be there for some good music and good art. See you there.

ANYWHERE BUT HERE October 23 2009
I really wouldn’t consider Los Angeles to be the fashion capital of the world. A quick case in point would be the comparison of our fashion week and NY’s or Paris’ fashion week. But LA is the birthplace of fashion house, BCBG; of skate/surf brands likes Stussy, Quicksilver, or Volcom; of streewear like The Hundreds or Freshjive. You can’t completely overlook those names. So why is it that LA never reaps benefits of some of the best fashion collaborations I’ve seen? I started realizing this when Collette and Gap teamed up last year in New York, and when Levi’s and Head Porter got together for items only released in Japan.
I can go on.
Then today, as I’m making my rounds through the internets, I see Stussy x Hello Kitty, sold in Japan.

If there was one brand that has stuck with me since childhood, it would have to be Stussy. Shawn and the gang just keep getting better as the years pass. And then Hello Kitty. I’m not as big a Sanrio fan as I was in elementary school, but that cat has bridged cultures and generations. I can respect that. The graphics on the tees are awesome - especially the ones about skating.
Another one I saw today was Jimmy Choo for H&M.

It hasn’t been officially stated that this will only be sold in NY stores, but I have a strong feeling that it will be. That’s how the Comme des Garcons collaboration went. Plus, H&M out there is a lot better than here. The Jimmy Choo line primarily consists of shoes and accessories. And now, women’s and men’s apparel (that includes shoes!!!) is released through the Swedish clothing company.
Can LA get some love, please?

BOOK IT October 22 2009
I’m in the middle of moving. I haven’t been focused on anything else this week, and that could be reason why the blog isn’t so good these days. I just finished building my TV stand, which also serves as an area for coffee-table-style books. I pulled my favorites from the bookcase in the office - ranging from fashion, street art, and photography. But I wanted to add more.

I looked to Amazon for help. First purchase was “100 Contemporary Architects” by German publisher, Taschen. I am very interested in architecture, but my knowledge stops at Los Angeles. And honestly, I couldn’t tell you anything about the person(s) that created the building or home. It’s purely visual to me. Taschen books are awesome in general (has anyone been to their store at the Grove or on Rodeo; I really want to check it out), and they’ve gathered top architects from around the world and featured their work.

Next was the “Where the Wild Things Are, The Movie Storybook”. Do I really need to say more? The photographs from this book are directly from the movie, which I loved. Look at the cover alone - Max and KW in the desert. Captivating.

To add to the photography category, I picked up the long awaited Estevan Oriol book called “LA Woman”. I am a huge fan of his photos - his ability to capture raw emotion, his focus on Los Angeles, and his themes of gang culture and street life. This time his subject is the Los Angelen(a).

Finally, I finished the purchase with a fashion book. I was originally going to get the one on Tom Ford. I respect what he did for Gucci and YSL, but the book seemed a little empty. So I opted for my original fave: Marc Jacobs. I don’t know what to expect from this one. It’s a pretty small book, sort of like a cliffs notes on the designer. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, though.

LOGO SERIES October 20 2009
Our fall line is fast approaching, and if you caught my post last week, we’re focusing on the long sleeves. Cardigans, crews, and zip up hoodies. On each of these pieces, we’re going to use a different logo. You’ve seen two of ‘em; the third is new. It’s a rough image, as it hasn’t even been vectorized yet. So if the fall line is supposed to be called something, we’re going with “the logo series”. Whether stitched or screenprinted, you’ll see it.
