MJ SAID SO June 26 2009 Events

“So tonight gotta leave that nine to five up on the shelf and just enjoy yourself. Groove….let the madness in the music get to you. Life ain’t so bad at all if you live it off the wall.” -Michael Jackson, Off the Wall

Soul Sessions is tonight with the Rhythm Natives at the Grand Star Jazz Club in Chinatown, LA. Live music, live art, and even a taco truck. Groove with them and let the madness in the music get to you. See you there.

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED June 26 2009

To some, he was an expiring pop star. To others, he was a freak. To most, he was guilty. But to me, MJ was the greatest. I have loved him since I can remember. I never grew out of the habit of listening to him. My iPod has the same collection my walkman had when I was a child. He made me appreciate the music before my time with the Jackson 5 and tracks like “Never Can Say Goodbye”. He changed the sound of R&B with Off the Wall. And just when critics thought he couldn’t top his own success, Thriller, Bad, and Dangerous were released. My generation has suffered a tremendous loss, similar to those who lost Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Elvis Presley, and John Lennon. Both in life and in death, Michael Jackson created an unparalleled legacy. He defined stage performance with the anti-gravity lean, moonwalk, and crotch grab, he influenced all genres of music, he bridged generation and racial gaps, he trademarked the one glove, white socks with black shoes look, he had people believe in the love he felt for a rat, and he made the Wizard of Oz and Disneyland even cooler. The sad part is that he was so close to doing that all over again. At least I think so…

I am heartbroken, I am sad. No one will ever do it like you, MJ.

EDIT: When I said that MJ bridged generation gaps, I also meant that in my own family. My younger cousin (and performance poet), Ela, shared her thoughts with me through a piece she wrote for the King of Pop. Read it on her site here.

FAMOUS x REBEL 8 June 25 2009

Paul (Sunday, Famous) shared these pix from the Famous x Rebel 8 event “There Goes the Neighborhood” that happened last weekend. The two brands came together to release limited edition tees, shirts, hats, and posters. I’m a fan of Rebel 8, especially Mike Giant who has taken his background of graffiti and tattoo art into this clothing line. Every graphic that he does for Rebel 8 is actually hand drawn, setting their designs apart from many others. Giant was at the event doing what he does best - a live art installation on The Fast Life store’s walls. In addition to that, the Alchemist was spinning, free tacos were fed to the frenzy, and Travis Barker showed off a few of his sweet rides.

SUMMER NIGHTASTIC June 24 2009

The crew took the day off to return to Neverland yesterday. We mostly wanted to check out Disneyland’s new summer season entertainment, but made a whole day out of it. Both my favorite things were upgraded - the fireworks show and Fantasmic. I give both a thumbs up. The fireworks show takes you back to classic Disney, with the soundtrack sung by Eden Espinosa - who will be on the CA ezine very soon. And Fantasmic, it’s just a dope experimentation of colors. For me, the Bellagio water show doesn’t top it.
