THE SOLOIST May 25 2009

I moonlighted as an entertainment writer in high school, so I'm channeling that persona for this entry.

Yesterday I watched "The Soloist", a film accounting the relationship between writer and subject. More specifically, an LA Times columnist and a street musician. Their first meeting - initiated by the sound of Nathaniel's two string violin in Pershing Square - turns into an unlikely friendship. In the end, both beautiful minds simply needed each other to overcome their adversities.

At the core of the movie is actually a story about the city, which is what I appreciated most. Perhaps what "The Soloist" does best is portray the harsh reality that is right in our backyards. There are 90,000 homeless people living in Los Angeles. The film grinds our faces in that socioeconomic condition and in the population's physical afflictions. It's an epic vision of downtown; one that actually looked like a third world country in the middle of this wealthy state.

Reminiscent of the message in "Crash", Nathaniel Ayers and Steve Lopez remind us that everyone is worth a shot. Go see it. And then see "Star Trek", cuz that's pretty good, too.

WE’RE IN LA, TRICK May 23 2009

We started the night going around DTLA.

Then to La Cita on Hill and 3rd.

And ended it at Little Temple on Santa Monica and Virgil.

STU-STU-STUDIO May 22 2009

After the game last night, I went to meet up the Rhythm Natives at the studio. They were laying down the track for their new single, slated to release in June.

Blazers, Hare Jordans, and Dunks a.k.a Jon, triciaCA, and Matt.

Chezzy, Alan, and producer Asi laying it down.

Some of Asi's work.

We are all connected.

This hangs above Asi's set up. A picture of the Eye of Horus - one of my favorite images, the Egyptian symbol of protection. I actually wear this around my neck along with a jade cross.

Matt's in a zone.

And Jon is playing with the Barrel Man.

Here's a snippet of what was worked on last night. 33 seconds of "So Fire".

Mark your calendar: The Rhythm Natives will be at Soul Sessions on Friday, June 26.
