EYE ON LA March 26 2009 Los Angeles
I've been dropping hints here and there about the e-zine launching next month (yes, I know I said mid-March, but things get crazy sometimes). The general idea of this expansion is to convey Los Angeles through the eyes of its artists, musicians, designers, store owners, spoken word poets, photographers. For this entry, I'm going to focus on the latter. My cousin Dave recently picked up photography. And like my new project, his subject is the city. It's his goal to photograph the many facets of LA. The pictures below were taken around Downtown in the wee hours of the morning. He did a great job of capturing that part of town. In the future, we will be working together on a lifestyle shoot and also on an interview for the magazine. Enjoy.

LATELY March 25 2009
With preparing for SF this weekend, World of Dance next weekend, the E-Zine, the collaboration projects with The Big Pill, Rhythm Natives, and Beatrock, my life has resorted to this:
Tofer Chin's exhibit called "Double Dip" is happening right now at the Cerasoli Gallery in Culver City. I like his optical illusion style that somehow forces a feeling of hallucination.

In their "Great Minds" collection, Stussy pays homage to great thinkers like Einstein, Thoreau, Marx, Freud, and Shakespeare. I'm down with all these dudes, particularly Thoreau who inspires me with transcendentalist thought.

In collaboration with Loopwheeler, Nike released this t-shirt in three different colorways. To be honest, I just think the message is pretty clever.

Of course, it's Nike again. For their Spring/Summer 2009 line, the Presto is resurfacing with new colors. I love this shoe. I still have a pair in lime green and a pair in red. Does anyone remember their Presto campaign in the 90s? My favorite was "Rabid Panda".

Ok, this entry wasn't THAT bad...

CASH ONLY March 24 2009
Last weekend, Eric (Backside, Erratic) hosted a cash only sample sale at one of my favorite LA spots, Cinespace. He had a solidified lineup for your shopping pleasure: Obey, Hellz, Freshjive, et al. Kim and I couldn't attend on Saturday because of Sportsfest, so we came through on Sunday. It was a success. Congrats, E.

The man behind it all.

Freshjive shoppers.
Brandon for Manifest.

Soul Assasins.

Threat and Needle setup.

The Ghetto Rock crowd.

Kim exiting with purchases from Freshjive, Manifest, and Ghetto Rock.

I, on the other hand, left with only one item that I'd never wear. They didn't have a t-shirt in my size (plus I've grown partial to American Apparel tees since that's all we print on, and I can't seem to put on anything thicker than that), so I picked up a trucker hat. I don't wear caps like that, but I appreciated the historical undertones and revolutionary message. I caught wind of this design when it was first released, but I slept on it. For now, this item will just be displayed.

THAT NEW NEW March 23 2009 CA New Releases & Los Angeles
In the online shop now.
RECYCLE
When I was having a conversation about the brand, I used the words "rethink", "recreate", and "reinvent" to describe CA's mission. We consider ourselves a cultural brand that strays away from the stereotypical and the obvious. I shared that conversation with Cokoy who put this design together. Using the universal recycle graphic, we changed the words to include the abovementioned. It's printed on American Apparel's softest t-shirt, in two colors: athletic grey and athletic blue.

We also like to throw some LA culture into our tees. The Dirty Dog is an integral part of the Los Angeles ethos; I captured it with this photo taken in Panorama City. I opted to shoot there instead of Hollywood. There's much more detail involved with off brand napkins hanging off the cart, tagged up street lights and walls, and old school strollers parked nearby. This one is printed on a cotton/polyester blend tee in three colors: heather black, heather forest, and heather plum.
