In preparation of the Hip Hop Honor Awards, VH1 aired another of their famed 'greatest' programs. This time, on the 100 greatest hip hop songs of all time. The campaign was viral; allowing the public to participate in online voting. At the end of it all, they crowned Public Enemy's anthem "Fight the Power" as number 1. Rounding out the top five were: Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight", Dre's "Nuthin but a G Thang", Run DMC's "Walk this Way" (featuring Aerosmith), and Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five's "The Message". I guess I'm alright with the results (come on, MC Hammer beat out Digable Planets, Arrested Development, JJ Fad, et al??). But it was more reminiscent than anything. It's kind of like in "Brown Sugar" when Dre asks Syd, "When did you first fall in love with hip hop?". When I saw the entire 100 list, I was reminded of when. You're even reminded of the fashion back then - when fat laces paired with big gold chains were fresh to death. The series runs til the end of the week if you want to check it out. Honestly, my number 1 vote would've went to Notorious BIG and "Juicy" (which at least made top 10, btw).
October 12, to be exact.
Forgive me as the last few days have been uneventful. Friends from the OC drove up for Thai food. They don't get this authentic south of the valley. Count em - 3 spicy catfish. Word. Great depression? Remember when Thrifty scoops were like 19 cents? Brentwood sunset. So cliche, but I don't care.
Friday night in the valley. All we did was buy stuff. First stop was Target to pick up sports equipment for our 1 year BBQ on October 12. We haven't bought everything just yet. Cokoy and I have been toying with the idea of playing soccer, so we might buy one to complete our Wilson lineup. Next was Borders. I normally buy my reads from Amazon. Kim, on the other hand, wants instant gratification. Luckily I found a pretty decent alternative to Moleskine notebooks for a lot less.
Remember Sesame Street where they would have the number and letter of the day? Or was that Pee Wee's Playhouse? Whatever the case, the number for today is 1. The number 1 college football team--my alma mater--the USC Trojans, lost to an unranked team last night. Though the game went down to the last minute, we really could have played a lot better. I won't post pictures for this one because, frankly, I'm a little ashamed. But of course, when someone loses, someone is also winning. The Dodgers, the number 1 team in the National League for the west, have just become champions of the division. Meaning that the Dodgers will stick around for the next month, hopefully all the way to the World Series.
